The forum is running excruciatingly slow today and in some cases hasn't responded at all.

I just spoke to Richard.

He has done a temporary fix but the forum will continue to run slow today. Sorry about that.

Today or tomorrow he will be upgrading the system with more memory which will speed

everything up to what we were previously used too.

In the meantime, we'll all have to be patient.

Thank you, Judy.

Could someone point me in the right direction to get the live cam feeds?

This is my first day back.

Thank you.

Hi, ana :wave

I think that the Hornby camera was not working for awhile. Try it again here:

Close-up camera: http://www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/s ... 1010059972

Wide-angle camera: http://www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/s ... 2140549584

Click on the arrow in the middle of the screen to start the camera.

Just wanted to let you know that this morning, the forum was fine -early morning. The message that the "Board is currently disabled" appeared. I left the forum for a while. I tried to get on starting at about 8:45 a.m. It took over a half hour to be able to get a page to open. Now that I'm back in, it's taking forever to post a reply to the forum.

The system is running horrible; posts are lost and like Lonette indicated takes forever to post. Message still appears at top Board is disabled....what does this mean. Also, when I try to bring up the Sidney cam Hornby recording comes up. What is going on??

Are the ads the reason why the board is painfully slow? That is when I noticed the slowness start. Frustrating.

Also since last Thursday (at least once and some days more often) when I go to log in I receive the message 'Sorry, board is temporarily unavailable; please try again in a few minutes'. I tried for 90 minutes this morning and gave up.

Thanks - BBE

We are being 'blessed' by the positive publicity we have had over the last while. The servers are unable to keep up with the demand -especially the live cams page which is getting so many hits. This is why Richard took all the cam pictures off that page; to make it less work for the server. This evening Richard has moved the fourms on to a server of their own to help distribute the workload. We are using 3 servers at 2 different sites. The Google ads are not a factor in the board being slow. They are hosted by Google's own servers; however as our own ads are hosted on OUR server, they are not being used at the moment. AS a matter of fact Richard says we made $260.00 from the google ads today.

So all in all, we are just barely keeping our head above water... BUT we are not drowning. If you are on FaceBook I will try to keep my FB page up to date if the forums aren't operating well.

I'm finding the forum runs much faster while I'm reading posts but when I go to submit a post that's when it slows down considerably. :sigh

To followup on my earlier post, Richard has clarified that the forum will be back to its usual address in a couple of days, and the problems logging in should disappear at that time. :D

I've posted a note from Richard as a Global Announcement here at the forum:

In order to quickly move the forum (1/2 hour was quick) I had to give it
a new name (discuss1.hancockwildlifechannel.org) and tell the old server
to "punt" the requests it got to the new one.

This new name is only temporary (in fact it answers to both the old and
new) - once the Domain Name Systems around the planet have lost all
their old records (takes from 2-3 days) then I can put things back to
the correct name and things like staying logged in will work properly
again. The problem with staying logged in is if you use a link to go to
the old name, the system "remembers" you with the new one. This will fix
itself as your ISP's DNS system times out and gets the correct address
for the new location of the old name.

I have to put some more RAM into the new machine. Note that this machine
was never supposed to support interactive stuff - it is used mainly for
e-mail sending and doing backups of various sites, including the main
HWF machine. This means that at times it can be very busy and also that
it really isn't all that fast to begin with.

Reading the forum is fast because it is largely all in RAM - but writing
is slow because the disks on this machine are big and slow, not small
and fast like a "real" server would be.

I'm still looking at other options to speed things up and get them all
back to the New York location. In the mean time I have several other
machines here at home that might do the trick, and one more down at the
office that I may be able to press into service - and it is a "server"
class machine - old but serviceable.

richard

The forum is not running slowly but since the other threads for tech questions is locked I will post this question here. I just noticed this:

In total there are 135 users online :: 2 registered, 2 hidden and 131 guests (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)

This is an extremely high number of users online, especially at a time when nothing in particular is happening on the cams.

Karen I mentioned that to Richard the other day when it was happening and he said he didn't think it was much to worry about and there was nothing showing in the activity log.

So that means that the information given to us in that line all these years has not been meaningful after all.
