If Echo is found alive and undamaged, it is possible to return him to the nest. In - I think 06 - at the Golden Eagle nest in Finland: For some reason Mom disappeared. Dad tried to feed and keep the eaglets warm but was failing. After a couple of days, the official observer whose home was near by along with another member of the team climbed the tree and removed the two eaglets. He housed them, kept them wrapped in blankets and fed. Mom returned after, I as best I recall with out looking it up, a 4 day absence. The decision was made and they returned the eaglets to the nest. Both parents accepted them and they thrived to safely fledge.

The key word is undamaged.

I was sent this link only today and logged on to see the horror unfolding. Poor echo. Poor mom. I too pray for a miracle and that she is found. Lived in BC for a few years and spent many happy hours watching eagles around port hardy, now I watch web cams . . .but this is too sad

Here's the link to the candle thread Skipper set up for the Hancock nests, for those who'd like to light a candle for Echo:

Light a Candle for the Hancock Eaglets

It doesn't look good right now - but occasionally miracles do happen. Echo is light and fluffy enough that I suspect he could have survived a fall, especially if he did a bit of bouncing on leafy branches on the way down. The trick will be to find him - that won't be easy, and will probably need to be done fairly rapidly as he's not old enough to control his own body temperature to any degree. But if he landed in a sheltered spot - and peeps enough that people can find him - there is a chance.

Sending good energy and positive thoughts can't hurt - and just might help.

How very sad for all the Eagle Watchers that have grown to love Echo and for Doug and David too. I'm so happy that I stayed up for all those hundreds of hours watching this nest when some people I know said I was NUTS. It was so worth it to have been part of "Little Echos" beginning. Prayers and hugs to all who are involved and who show concern.

KathieA from Hornby Nest watchers.

My heart is breaking regardless the outcome... right NOW,this very moment, I am grieving... It may turn to happiness later, but right now, I feel a loss.

When I signed up, logged on, I KNEW things could happen, but we choose to think, "NOT US!", but it can happen to anyone, any animal, etc.

We should all bond together and not bicker and fight like it was earlier on the chat.... THAT broke my heart too... to be told, as a regular and one who tries to stay positive, to be blocked so only a couple of people could talk.... I left.... I was trying to be respectful, but at the same time ten or twelve people typing to shut up..... which is worse?

*returning to lurking now*

Baby chicks this young who are dropped from the nest usually suffer multiple fractures and can't be saved. We've had them in the hospital... very sad. I'm so sorry. :ecsad

Hello everyone - hopping over here from the Maine Forum. I am so, so sad to see this happen! What a crazy thing to have happen!! I don't think there will be a good outcome for Echo - I seriously think she was injured while Mom kept trying to release her. I'm soooo sorry to everyone here! :( I'll be praying for Hope's success!!

Thanks for the input beans. If Echo did suffer severe injuries, I hope he's out of his misery now and not suffering at all. BUT, I hope they can find him and he's just shaken, not injured. Time will tell, but I'm still praying for a miracle.

Gotta leave for work...my prayers are with Echo and the rest of the Hornby family. Hopefully when I get home, there will be happier news.

One of the most heartbreaking things I have ever seen, you could see Moms panic as she tried desperately to get Echo untangled. I had to keep turning away from it and then coming back a few minutes later, hoping for a better outcome. I also pray for a miracle.

I've seen nature shows where some species of ducklings have to fall & bounce down steep jagged cliffs to get to the water. So I'm praying if most of them can survive that, then Echo will survive branches of trees that slowed her way down

Patti.....Good to hear from you but sorry it's under such horrible circumstances. I remember how we all cried with you Maine eagle cam watchers as the tragedies unfolded back there in 2007. It's wonderful how these majestic birds have brought so many of us together across the continent and oceans. Lots of eagle hugs to everyone today as we all grieve together.

Yes. Greyfloppysocks....that was a horrible Chat...To think that someone should have all the control over this devastating event is terrible....We all needed to talk...especially us regulars....that broke my heart too...

IN MEMORY OF LITTLE "ECHO"

At 10:30 this morning I looked under the eagle tree and found Echo lying on the ground. I picked him up. He was soft and warm but absolutely still - no signs of life.

Just when we realized that Echo was managing very well in dealing with his big sister and was getting his share of the food, this totally unexpected tragedy occurred.

We are all upset. It reminds us how tenuous life is, especially in the wild. We will miss little Echo but still have Hope.

While mom was feeding the remaining eaglet I thought that I heard sounds like the initial chirpiness of Echo. I am wondering if it is Hope that was caught in mom's claw as she hurried to get up. It seems that mom became alarmed and in her hastiness to protect her young, she was unable to rise completely clear with her claws. I am wondering if there is a spur claw which caught on to the chick.

We are witnessing nature in the raw but we must be very careful not attribute human feelings to the birds. It is so easy to do so when we notice personalities traits and/or sad things as we saw recorded, today.
In my first year of watching the webcams I became a victim of "anthropomorphism". It has taken me these three years to be able to know that it is an honour to observe the eagles with their many phases of development and it is magnificent to see their first flights in only twelve weeks from hatching!
I hope that those of you who are crying today will see this remaining little eaglet successfully raised; as well eaglets in the others nests that we watch
MM
