Tesoro, Florida - Bald Eagle Cam

http://www.audubonofflorida.org/friendsoftheeagle/cam.html

Direct addresses for the two cams at this site:

Link to the Institute for Wildlife Studies web site for tracking Birdie:

This cam is located in Port St. Lucie on the Atlantic Coast of Florida about 125 miles north of Miami, and eagles (possibly the same pair!) have been nesting here since 1978. This pair has moved four times since building their initial nest, and while they have done some work on an alternate nest, it looks as if they'll be back in the nest with a cam for this nesting season. The nest is in a dead tree, so no leaves to obscure the view!

This pair successfully fledged two eaglets in 2006; they laid at least one egg in 2007, but it didn't hatch. Florida eagles nest from October - May, and based past experience for this pair, look for eggs in the first half of December, chicks in mid-January, and fledging in early April.

2007-2008 Season:
  • eggs laid: beginning around December 7 based on behavior of parents
  • hatched: feeding behavior seen January 12 (hatch may have been January 11); first screen cap of chick January 18; second chick seen January 21
  • fledged: older female flew to neighboring tree April 1 at 9:05 am (81 days - 11-1/2 weeks); younger male flew to neighboring tree April 2 at 7:26 am (~79 days - a bit over 11 weeks)

2008-2009 Season:
  • there was no funding for the cam this year, and no updates have been posted on the Florida Audubon web site

SUNDAY September 2:

Here is a series of screenshots at sundown. Recording wouldn't have been useful,
the images looked as if the site was refreshing every second or two.

It looks like the eagle pair here has an uninvited guest visiting the nest when they're not home.

BOP,

Yes that is a hawk. It looks like a juvenile Red-shouldered hawk.

Yesterday we were treated to some really gorgeous moments with an eagle sitting on a branch overlooking the lake. It was there for hours, preening and cooling itself. They were both seen at dusk together on the nest possibly copulating.

The cam has been working intermittently and sometimes not at all - it's quite unreliable. Also the Audubon Society had announced that the pair seemed to have started a new nest, but it certainly appears as though they still like the old one!

Good "mistake". At least there's a cam working and an eagle there at Cape Coral :D

I can't get Tesoro to work now either. This is the link I use:

I hope you got a chance to see the eagles there smallpaws. It will be interesting to see if they do choose this nest this year.

Dawn and dusk, or early morning and late evening are usually good times to tune in. It's so rewarding to see them both together.

Baby Batter....

For those of you cognizant, here's the original from Harvey Mandel. What an awesome piece of work. Those Tesoro eagles know the "riff."

I think I figured it out. a "rifff" is a musical term and Raptor Dan is relating the musical part to the eagles??

Pretty far off Dan.

GOOD NEWS... the Tesoro Eagles seems to have laid an egg - yesterday 7th December, one day before they laid last year (8th Dec), isn't that amazing? They appear to be incubating.

We were having such fun with the Pan Tilt and Zoom camera, but the discovered we shouldn't have been enjoying ourselves so much, it was never intended for public use. Audubon shut the web page down with the cam so for a few days we missed nest building but we think we were fortunate enough to catch the first egg being laid. Now we should watch - today or tomorrow for more eggs.. :)

Last year they failed, we do not know what happened or why, but they continued to sit on the nest apparently incubating for an extra month, which was very unusual, but there were no chicks. This year it was thought they had moved to another nest until they were seen recently nest building.

While we had the cam we were able to catch some extremely beautiful photos of this lovely, loyal pair.
