Cape Coral, Florida - Bald Eagle Cams

http://www.capecoral.net/wildcams/
Cape Coral is on Florida's Gulf Coast, about 100 miles south of Tampa. There are two cams here, EagleCam I and EagleCam II. The username and password for the Cam I is public and the username and password for Cam II is demo (both all lower-case letters). Live streaming feed, but it slows when too many are logged in at the same time. Cam I has infrared light, allowing limited night vision.

EagleCam I
Link>>> http://74.95.63.177/ password public (in both places - you may need to enter it twice)
Eagles here are named George and Gracie. The original George died in 2006 and Gracie found another mate George II. Gracie appears to be about 20 and George II appears to be much younger. Gracie continued her success by fledging eaglets with George II in 2007.

2007-2008 Season:
  • eggs laid: before cam was active - maybe late November
  • hatched: feeding behavior seen December 26; first screen cap of chick January 6; two chicks seen January 8
  • branching: smaller one branched February 24, a little over 8 weeks old; serious lift by both seen a couple of days earlier
  • fledged: smaller one fledged March 11 (74 days or 10-1/2 weeks); older one fledged around March 19 (84 days or 12 weeks)
  • last seen: both together April 23 (117 days or 16-1/2 weeks); one alone May 11 (137 days or 19-1/2 weeks)

EagleCam II
Link>>> http://69.34.225.3/ password demo (in both places - you may need to enter it twice)
This unnamed pair has been successfully raising eaglets at their current location for several years, and fledged two eaglets in 2007.

2007-2008 Season:
  • egg(s) laid: beginning around December 2 based on behavior of parents
  • hatching: feeding behavior seen January 8 (35 days was January 6); one chick seen January 22; cam down January 23 - February 22; one eaglet in nest when cam returned
  • fledged: may have fledged March 25 (77 days - 11 weeks old); was away from the nest all day and returned in the morning
  • last seen: May 13 (126 days - 18 weeks)

Image
(screen cap by Marcia on the Maine Eagle Cam Forum)

Based on past experience, look for eggs in the first half of December, chicks in mid-January, and fledging in early April, though they can successfully lay eggs up to two months later - especially if the first clutch fails.

Thanks - I hadn't realised that the Cape Coral nest was the same as the Tesoro nest.

Oops - it isn't! My mistake. I have not been able to get on Tesoro either, and Cape Coral is on and off, so I got confused and jumped the gun.

Folks on the Maine Cam Forum think there was an egg laid December 2, and looking through the screen caps there, the eagles do seem to have moved into incubating mode!

Here's BIRDER's pic from the Maine Forum:

Their discussion and pictures start here. :D

Just thought I would pass on a quick update that I received regarding these 2 eaglecams. I'd been watching Cam II pretty faithfully and we're pretty sure as JudyB said that an egg was laid on or around Dec. 1/2 which would make a possibility of a hatch on or around Jan. 4/5. The cam has been down for awhile now so I sent an email asking about it and also the status of George II & Gracie's Cam I since the date is stuck at 9/6/07.

Here's my email that I sent:
Quote:
I and many others on the Maine Eagle Forum had been watching the Cam II eagle pair since they first started laying this year.
What happened to that camera and will it be back???
We all think that the female layed her first egg on or around Dec. 1/2 which would make the hatching date on or around January 4/5 which isn't too far away...

Also on the George & Gracie Cam I, it is live now right? We were wondering because of the date being stuck on 9/6/2007.
Thanks so much for these wonderful cameras!

And here's the quick response I got from Connie Baron:
Quote:
From our Public Information Director:
"Thank you for the email. I am glad you are enjoying the WildCam setup on our website. Unfortunately, we have technical problems on-and-off with the cameras. Any electrical, cable or phone interruption can knock the cameras offline. This seems to have occurred with EagleCam II, which probably has been our most reliable equipment. We will be resetting the camera; however, that requires someone to go to the site of the camera. The process is simple, but with several employees out this week due to the holidays, we may not get to it until after the first of the year.

Yes, the camera trained on George II and Gracie is a live shot. Our IT person will be resetting the date on the camera. If you have not checked out the OspreyCam, you might plug into that one. Right now, it is showing motion jpeg, and the lens is zoomed close to the nest. Just saw one of the birds hanging around the nest this morning. Their nesting season will be getting in gear after the first of the year. Again, thank you for watching our birds. We will keep our fingers crossed and hope that the equipment works well for an entire season for a change."

So here's hoping that the New Year brings Cam II back up and a little eaglet soon after. :D

Someone on the Maine eagle cam forum thought it looked as if they might be feeding a chick - has anyone else seen that?

Unfortunately Cam I wasn't working when the eggs were laid, so we don't know when that was - but it's probably not that different from the timetable for Cam II (which is now temporarily off-line) and hatching was expected there in the first week in January.

Thanks for getting the update from Cape Coral, Lori, and thanks for the pictures, soph9!

I do believe that there is indeed a chick! :D

I've been watching for awhile and I do think it was a feeding I just saw at 2:45pm EST. Plus she is sitting as though there may be a wee one under her.

I saw a little head this time so I know for sure there is at least one eaglet. :)
Gracie & George II have the first eaglet of the season.

I love your last picture, Lori - "What have we here??" They actually are looking more intently in #3 and #4 - but it's easier to see them in that one. And I like the seagull (?) flyby you captured. :D

Looks to me like another feeding at 3:35 pm Eastern time (I can never remember if we're on Standard or Daylight time - there's something about the idea of "saving daylight" that causes my rational little mind to rebel  ). I've been trying to see if I can make out the top of a fuzzy head - but I really haven't seen anything I'm sure isn't part of the adult's head (there seem to be enough people watching that the video stream jumps rather than flows). But it definitely looks more like feeding than egg-turning! :D

After mom fed the chick(s), something seemed to be bothering her...I think it was an "intruder"....she has settled down now.

What a great s'cap Soph9!!! A flyby and birds perched in the branches!
I've been watching too and I get alot of buffering also. I am still convinced that they are feeding a chick. It just needs to get a bit bigger so we can see the little dickens.

edit to remove pic from quote & change to linkl

Aha! So glad that you saw 'something' too soph9. :D
I really don't think that they would have prey on the edge of the nest all day long if they weren't feeding an eaglet or 2.
Here's a feeding from 1:40pm EST
