Santa Cruz Island, California - Bald Eagle CamPelican Harbor Nest Camhttp://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/nestcam.htmdirect link to the cam:
http://media1.vcoe.org/eaglecam1There is currently only one cam on Santa Cruz, at Pelican Harbor (the nest was originally known as Santa Cruz, but is now being called Pelican Harbor with the expectation that there will be more nests on the island in the next year or two). It is a streaming camera with sound, and is generally on during daylight hours, as it relies on solar power.
The
parents were both hatched in the San Francisco Zoo (
male K10 in 2001 and
female K26 in 2002) and then fostered into nests on Catalina Island (K10 in the Twin Rocks Nest and K26 in the West End Nest). K26 laid two eggs in 2006 and two in 2007, one of which hatched each year. Their first chick was the female A49, known as Cruz. Cruz was the first eagle chick to hatch in the wild on the Channel Islands since 1949. The 2007 chick A63 was a male named Limuw, which is the Chumash name for Santa Cruz Island. Limuw died about 7 weeks after fledging; he was found by the side of the road in Nevada, probably hit by a car while scavenging roadkill. Cruz was on Santa Rosa (another of the northern Channel Islands) as of mid-November 2007 - you can follow her travels
here.
Cruz and Limuw were assigned blue wing tags with the letter A because they were hatched on Santa Cruz, which is one of the northern Channel Islands; K10 and K 26 have orange tags with the letter K because they were raised on Catalina Island.
Based on past experience, look for eggs in the first half of March, chicks in mid-April, and fledging in late June or early July.
2007-2008 Season:
- egg(s) laid: first egg February 24, about 1:29 pm; second egg February 27, about 5 pm
- hatched: first egg April 1, 7:15 am (37 days), second egg possibly April 2, 4:15 pm (35 days) (confirmed sighting morning of April 3rd)
- attacked by juvenile and knocked from nest: May 19 (age 48 and 46 days); older suffered a fractured wing and younger a punctured beak; both were rescued by an IWS crew and taken to the mainland for treatment; coverage begins here: http://discuss.hancockwildlifechannel.org/viewtopic.php?p=280263#p280263
- returned to island and placed in hacking tower: younger - June 8 (age 9-1/2 weeks)
- fledged: younger A-64 "Spirit" - July 1 (89 days) (as of July 4, older eaglet is still on the mainland recovering from its fractured wing)
- returned to island and placed in hacking tower: older - July 14 (age 104 days - almost 15 weeks)
- fledged: older - July 17 (107 days - had to wait for broken wing to heal)
- died: older A-65 "Skye" died August 8 (18.5 weeks) - drowned tangled in kelp bed
- doing OK: A-64 "Spirit" was still on Santa Cruz as of the end of October 2008, and apparently doing well
