Blackwater Refuge, Maryland - Bald Eagle Cam

The camera has frequently updating still shots, and uses infrared technology to provide "night vision." They hope to have it daily back online around December 10th. It is turned off from 11 pm - 3 am to reduce bandwidth expenses.

The nest is located in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In the three years the camera has been on line, the pair has successfully raised seven eaglets - three chicks in 2005, two in 2006 and two in 2007.

Based on past experience, look for eggs in late January, chicks in early March, and fledging in mid to late May.

2008 Season:

• eggs laid: January 26 (seen 3:52 pm) and January 30 (seen 6:56 am)
• hatched: March 3 (seen 5:37 pm) (~37 days) and March 5 (seen 6:33 am) (~35 days)
• fledged: one by May 26 (84 days - 12 weeks) and the other by June 9 (96 days - almost 14 weeks) (camera angle makes it hard to tell exactly)
• last seen: both were on the nest July 1 (about 17 weeks) (cam down in mid July)

12/11/07:
Welcome back!

We've already seen an adult eagle visiting the nest.

Also, it looks like the parents have been building up the nest in preparation for another nesting season.

Eagle cam is back live....and here is an adult visitor!

Both eagles have been seen fixing up the nest.

Eagles are very loyal to their nests, so we are likely seeing the same pair that we have had during our previous cam seasons.

LOOK! The pair is back together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can really tell in this pic who the female is compared to the male...

The pair are in and out of the nest and really look like nestorations are in effect!

You can see that the pair has brought in some bedding! New and fresh!

They are rebuilding now!

The pair are doing some real nestorations!

Look at the nest....they have built a fence of sticks to frame it out.

Thanks for the pictures and news of the update, soph9! I liked the picture of the nest from the ground that Lisa posted in her update - makes "80 feet up in the air" seem more real, and gives a perspective on how big the nest is!

the eagle cam seems to have some problems at the moment, but over at the osprey nest:

I think the eagles know the cam is down at their nest on are smart to get some air time at the Osprey nest!

From the folks at the Blackwater nest site....the eagle cam is back up but they are worried about their solar panel and will check in with the supplier on Monday.
