Kent, Washington - Bald Eagle Cam

http://www.thermosight.com/AutoEagle.htm - link to cams
http://wdfw.wa.gov/wildwatch/eaglecam/kent.html - about the nest
There are three cams at this site, each giving a different view of the nest; the cams refresh every 10 seconds.

The eagles are named Star (female) and Spirit (male), and they've raised 16 eaglets over the past 8 years. Based on past experience, look for eggs in mid-March, chicks in late April, and fledging in mid to late July.

Hi, All!

I've been keeping an eye on the Kent nest (as I have for the past 6 or so years that it has had a web cam) - here's the Feb 2008 update from that site:

The Kent EagleCam Story
Update February 2008
Yes indeed for those of you eager, early eagle watchers you did see a person in the eaglecam a few weekends back. As the bald eagle nest degraded and fell apart through winter storms and months the camera views needed adjusting (so many of you knew that). This early-season task is always a bit of a guessing game as we aim the cameras at where we “think” the eagles will build-up the nest without losing our intimate view to the bowl of the nest.

This year the eagles have not conducted mid-winter nest maintenance and the winter squirrel tenants have continued to rob the nest of sticks to a small size never recorded before of remembered by the landowners over many years.

So please stay tune as nest building with this pair is expected to commence soon and send the site to your friends.

http://www.westgeorgianews.com/gallery/v/Eagles+2008/ The Gallery shows pictures of them beginning to rebuild the nest as recently as March 5 - YEA!

And just yesterday, I was out in my back yard and heard an eagle trilling - looked up and saw it fly by and knew it was either Star or Spirit from the Kent nest (it is just a couple of miles from my house)! I went out front to see if I could see where it went and saw a group of neighbors out in the street looking up and pointing. BTW, I live at the end of a dead end street, so not a problem to eagle-gawk in the road! Sure enough, they were pointing up to the top of a huge fir tree and there sat both Star AND Spirit - how cool! And it was fun to share some of my raptor knowledge with the 5 or so kids there.

Since they still seem to be working on the nest - thank goodness! - there are no eggs yet...but the first egg has been laid as early as March 19 and as late as April 11 so there's still plenty of time! I'm wishing now that I had run back to the house and grabbed my camera but they only stayed there for about 5 minutes and then took off - what a great sight to see!

It sure made MY weekend! :nod

Mods: Soooooooorry - I couldn't get the posh link to work on The Gallery website - please fix if you can - thanks! :ecrolleyes

And landl - thanks much for posting that picture! :nod

The nest is so much smaller right now that you can't see it on the cam! :eceek

Edit: P.S. landl - I tried to reply to your PM but my reply seems to be stuck in my Outbox! :ecnono

Here's an update from Loraine - the homeowner of the property where the Kent nest is located...hmmmmm, maybe that was NOT Spirit that was with Star last weekend... :eceek

March 13 2008
1:50pm

It seems the female eagle here is Star. We believe, unfortunately she has a new mate. A few minutes ago there was continual commotion when Star flew around her nest tree then landed on the perch branch with a large catch, a 12"-15" trout. It really didn't look that big on the screen so I went outside to watch the amazing scene and could see its size. She teasingly made several revolutions around the nest tree dipping down & around nearly landing on our roof-top then back up and around and back to the nest tree perch branch again. The flirtatious flight-chase was over the house with this new mate literally on her tail and squawking throughout the chase. Minus the flirting, this was similar to how the fledglings react when they're making their first flights...squawking through the entire flight where at each wing- flap they screech as if to say "HEY LOOK AT ME!", or an "I DID IT! I'M DOING IT! I'M A FLYER!". It makes one wonder if this is Star's attempt in coaxing her new guy to the nest building process since we've seen mating advances and many sticks being brought in recently but not much increase in the nest size. As far as we know there's no other nest in the immediate area for them to lay eggs, incubate and hatch or nurture young at this point. Biologists say eagles always have an alternate nest and if that is the case here, why is this pair so adamantly set on roosting, perching and staying right here at this nest area during the day as well as during the nighttime dark hours? Again time will tell....

She perched watching "him" in a fir just 70' away but didn't eat the fish as she would have normally done (pic in gallery titled "Holding a fish"). It seemed to be just a chase between the two adults. They both flew off & she still had the fish in her talons..

Why?? Well your guess is as good as ours. This is another amazing, unique start to a new season and we're patiently waiting like everyone. Have a great weekend!

Answer to the #1 question we're getting about a CAM3 connection is as soon as the WDFW gets the server installed.

Sincerely,
Loraine and Garry

Here's the latest info from Loraine - the property owner where the nest is located. Hooray that the Kent Eagles seem to want to stay at this nest! I'll keep checking in and post any news...

June 2008

At the beginning of what was a normal new EagleCam season, and after camera maintenance was complete in February, that joy slowly turned to a peculiar skepticism as to whether Star and Spirit would return to rebuild this almost completely disintegrated nest. But they did, and they’ve been back with committed determination. They continue to rebuild the nest, working sometimes into the dark hours, sometimes for days in a row, and as often as they can, crossing one green or sometimes dry stick at a time, poking and pushing those huge clumps of grass, bundles of straw and debris through any void areas, one small cluster at a time. Those items they choose not to use, well we find below—piles of them—small, large, every day, all the time.

Although I know for many of the viewing public and long time EagleCam watchers, this all seems to be a daunting, discouraging and extremely slow process; but we must remember this is the world of a bald eagle, more importantly the world of wildlife. Their time is not hurried along.

You are seeing this season’s progress from the “ground up” or in this case, the “base up”. You’re viewing the systematic construction of a brand new nest. If you can imagine it’s all being compiled using very unique tools, beaks and talons, and building on the strength they gather through overcoming the odds any wild creature faces, i.e.: interference from humans, the interlopers or invaders that have and had taken refuge in the base of this nest for so many years (and ended up being their downfall – no pun intended!), the strange and inclement “cold/wet/hot/cold/wet” weather we’ve had and continue to have causing the delay of any normal spring and now summer, as well as human interferences they deal with constantly. Many nearby areas of treed, brushy, countryside landscape and meadows have been cleared for homes. These were areas they’ve used for several years (old snags to build with or forage for prey) have been removed but these birds are resilient. Still, they forge on, they are determined to rebuild and produce young again at this nest. Mother Nature knows when that will be and it’s by her guidance they will continue to do what they are intended to do.

In many other cases, eagle pairs will use an alternate nest. We would have thought these two might have or possibly decided to move elsewhere too but this pair has not. They roost here night after night. They are here at dawn, through the morning hours to afternoon and into evening again. Some days it’s like they want to get this ‘home’ completed in a day; other days it’s all in that “eagletime” we speak of. In any event, this is all an incredulous journey we hope you continue to follow along, you’ve been devoted supporters over the years, don’t give up on “your” eagles now.

We realize funds are limited for many these days but also hope you continue to support the WDFW Watchable Wildlife program. If it weren’t for your continued contributions, these & the other wildlife cams you, your friends and family members view would not be possible.

For occasional updates, we will post as often as possible using this webpage link http://wdfw.wa.gov/wildwatch/eaglecam/kent.html. Be sure to also visit the Lake Washington Cam with “Peek” and “Boo”, they’re growing like weeds! In addition, check the Deltaview Forum and Gallery at http://www.forum.eaglechat.com/index.php too.

Again remember without your support these cams and the Watchable Wildlife program would not be possible.

Sincerely,
Loraine and Garry

The following pictures are a few of this season’s nest rebuild process, from the past few months to present. There are pictures of that ominous ‘hole’ that started the destruction process last fall as well as comparisons of the nest starting in February up to today.

Perhaps this is the season Star has decided to take a break “from kids.” Who knows? We’re not sure we’ll have eaglets at this nest this year but stranger things have happened. They may surprise us. We always knew a year without eaglets may occur; we just didn’t want to see it – again - and not because of nest destruction. Things will come around, just like in 2004.
Last fall squirrels burrowed holes up through the bottom of the nest as you can see in the following pictures. Star seemed to be surprised as well...

These cameras should be back on-line by next Wednesday afternoon. If all goes well, these cameras will become streaming with sound and night vision.

Thanks for the update, Tom - and for your longer post on the Lake Washington thread - viewtopic.php?p=408555#p408555 - great news that this nest may have streaming video and sound! :D

[Admin Note - I'm off to work now, but now that I know these cams should be operational this year, I'll set up the 2009 thread for this nest soon - and delete this note.!]

Well despite having a very successful maintenance day, a few glitches still need to be worked out before these cam will be back online. Sorry! Here's a little movie of the climb.

UPDATE ON KENT EAGLES
The following comments have been compiled by the homeowners where the eagles are nesting. Many thanks to Garry and Loraine! eglldy@qwest.net
February 2009

Star and Spirit have returned! And yes, we’re back for the 10th Kent EagleCam season! Thank you everyone for the collaborated effort, without it this view would not be possible. An enormous warm thank-you to all the viewers, any supporters and contributors as well - your donations and well wishes are immeasurable! We look forward to your kind words, letters, emails and appreciate all of it.

The nest, at this point is a meager, scant bunch of sticks compared to previous years but as you can see in these photos, the birds have returned to rebuild their 'home' in this huge cottonwood tree once again. These particular photos have been taken from inside. They are from the camera monitors that actually sit on a table in our kitchen. Until we get the connections “tweaked” and equipment set up completely this is all we have visually at this point.

We've experienced so many difficulties over the past several months and year (not only with the nest disintegration) but with the equipment too and send our thanks to all involved in getting the new gear installed and server issues resolved - we're moving on as enthusiastically as humanly and financially possible. And more great news, exciting new additions! Once all the proper connections are complete we will have audio along with infrared nighttime viewing as well.

How will the season unfold? Will we have a complete nest this year? Will there be eggs? Will there be babies? These are all great questions and we’re asking them too. The major factor is we know the birds are enthusiastic about getting their nest rebuilt; we just have to be patient once again. We just don't know and just as every year, we wait and see how things evolve and watch for the amazing progress to unfold. As heart wrenching, as this can be at times, that’s the thrill, excitement, and adventure these cam views and this pair of wild bald eagles produce. We just never know and again, only time will tell… This will be a brand new adventure for us.

As with all of you, we were never able to watch the beginnings of nest construction occur but this year we’ll all have that opportunity so stay tuned -- continue to watch with us…

Hi, kittenface! :wave

Thanks for posting the Kent Eagles update from Loraine. I live just a couple of miles from the nest and if you click on my HWF album (part of auto sig at the bottom of my posts) you'll see some pictures of the nest tree...and a growth progression in photos of their 2006 eaglet.

I'll try to visit the area near the nest this weekend and get a pic of the new beginnings of the 2009 nest. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to see Star and Spirit too! :eclove :nod
