Sooner Lake, Oklahoma - Bald Eagle Cam

This nest has streaming video with two cams mounted on poles at opposite sides of the nest.

The nest is on Sooner Lake, near Stillwater in north-central Oklahoma. The current nest is on an artificial tower erected by the Sutton Avian Research Center and local utility OG&E to replace the original dead nest tree used by this pair after it fell down. The pair first built a nest in the dead tree in 1995, and laid their first eggs in 1996. Since then, they've fledged 24 eaglets, with three eaglets in 2000 and 2002. 2008 was the first year they've known how many eggs were laid; they do know that three eggs hatched in 2007, but the youngest chick was unable to compete for food with its older siblings, so only two of them fledged. There were four eggs laid in 2008, but the cam was down for a month shortly after they started to hatch, so we don't know how many of them hatched; there were two eaglets when the cam came back, and both fledged successfully.

2008-2009 Season:

• cams on line: January 14
• eggs laid: February 6, 3:47 pm (after about 3 hours of labor); February 9, 4:10 pm; late February 13 or early February 14 (seen 7:56 am)
• hatched: seen March 21, 6:58 am (day 36 for third egg); other eggs did not hatch (one stuck to parent's feathers and was removed from the nest after a week or so; the other was still in the nest as of early June)
• fledged: June 16, 6:01 am (87 days, or about 12-1/2 weeks)
• last seen: on cam July 23 (124 days), in area August 1 (133 days)

Guess what I just found - two cams!

Now all we need are eagles!

This is one of the earlier nests, and I think the first egg was around February 1st last year - so it is one to keep an eye on!

Saw an eagle on the nest this afternoon - had to leave right afterwards, and it's late now - but will add a picture tomorrow.

Both eagles in the nest, moving sticks around.

It's a bit disconcerting to watch as the two cams aren't quite in sync, and they take turns freezing briefly - but it's really nice to see the action from two different perspectives - and it looks as if both of them will give us a good look at any eggs that might appear.

Looked as if one of them was testing out the nest bowl - they seem to be right on schedule!

They have the following information on their website:

I just tried to bring it up with IE 6 and wasn't successful - but that might be because I already have it open in Firefox. Which browser are you using, Debbie?

Judy not sure what a browser is I know I have windows lol and I think it must be version 7 does that help?

right version of your browser...just make sure you click yes to "andy" to be installed when trying to view the cams....on another not...this cam sucks the life out of my laptop which is pretty powerful...really slows things down.

Soph andy does not come up as an option for me

I'm guessing you may need either a different version of Java - or you may need to change your Internet Explorer settings to allow Java to run. I don't have version 7 of Internet Explorer, so am not sure I can find the setting to change. Soph? Or shall we bring the question over the the Technical Help area?

JudyB you can delete this after Debbie responds OK?

Open up IE7...go to tools....over to your right....click on tools and then internet options.....then click on advance....this is what you would see Debbie...enable JAVA and that should work after you reboot.....make sense?

Hi Soph and Judy I did this looks like it was enabled. I am wondering if it has something to do with Norton antivirus system maybe my settings are too strict but then why can I get other cams . I am baffled for sure! Thanks for your help.

This cam uses a different technology than most other cams. I know there's an answer - but am not sure what it is.

I noticed that I hadn't been able to see the cam for a couple of days, so checked with Alan Jenkins at the Sutton Center - here's his reply:

"Our techies tell me that the problem is at the power plant where the camera signals are sent from the nest, and the transmission from there. Yesterday they rebooted their server, but that didn't solve the problem. OG&E will have to get their technicians out there (they all work in Oklahoma City), and that requires a work order and many even a couple of days wait. Looks like we are back in the same situation of breakdowns! Sorry, no one is more disappointed than I am."

I do hope they'll be able to get to this soon - first egg was around the first of February last year, and it would be nice to watch from the beginning!

One of the Sooner Lake cams is back up and Mom's in the nest - do you suppose??

Mom's gone, and I don't see an egg. But I do think it will be a race between Sooner Lake and Norfolk - and considering how much time Liberty and Belle are spending in the NCTC nest at Shepherdstown, it may not be just a two-nest race!
