Skipper just sent me the following information:

The Caltrans eagle's nest is now live :!:

I don't know if you are familiar with the story but here's the short version. Caltrans (California Transportation) put a huge cone in an eagle's nest to stop resident eagles from nesting. The eagles tried anyway. A group of people got together to put pressure on the powers-that-be and they removed the cone.

A member by the name of californiakayaker first posted a head's up on HWF. I think David got involved, or at least I think he knows about it. Here's the link to the thread:

viewtopic.php?f=33&t=2249

Here is the link to the cam page:

http://www.turtlebay.org/eaglecam

We'll be adding more information to the opening post soon - but wanted to let people know there was another cam to watch! :D :D I haven't had time to check it out, but understand from other forums that it uses QuickTime, and some people have had trouble connecting. Hopefully we'll find a way around that soon.

Thanks, Skipper - and Enjoy! :D

I like the angle of this cam - it will be hard to count the feathers on little tiny chicks - but we should be able to count the eggs and with luck see when they hatch. And at the other end we should be able to see a bit of branching - seems like a good compromise! :D

mid afternoon seems to be the time I've seen them most. I saw both of them yesterday around 4:30 PM pacific time. They were out on one of the branches together. I'll try to get a screen shot next time. I didn't think about it, I just called the kids in to see the two eagles! One is a lot larger than the other. Does anyone know if that is the male or female???

Anyways, thank you for the welcome, I'll post pics if I see them again.

Josh in Redding

Hi joshndeb :

From what I know of eagles (not an expert though :ecnono  ), a female eagle is larger than a male.

That would be awesome if you could post screencaps. :thumbsup If you have any problems or questions about screencaps, feel free to PM me or post your questions here.

I have been following the story of the Caltrans eagles since californiakayaker first posted--I think about a year ago or so now :puzzled

Do you live closeby to the nest :?:

Edited to add:

I copied this from the "Frequently Asked Questions About the Bald Eagle" posted by lyndabird here:

viewtopic.php?p=87374#p87374

How can you tell the difference between the mother and father eagle?
Male and female eagles have the same coloring but are different in size. Females are about 1/3 larger than males and the female’s call is generally lower pitched than the male’s call, which is almost a scream. Another way to tell them apart is to measure the height of their bill. The female’s bill is always deeper than the male’s and usually has a larger hook than the male’s.

Well it must not have stayed long because it's gone already. Thanks, kittenface, for the screen shot.

Darn, I missed it. I wish this cam had sound. I had it on but wasn't looking while I was posting elsewhere on the forum. Thanks, Josh, for letting us know.

This nightvision photo was on until my stream expired. When I hit refresh, I got the standard, check back during the daylight hours message. BUMMER. It would be cool to watch them at night too!!!
