Decorah, Iowa - Bald Eagle Cam

http://www.raptorresource.org/eagle_dailies/
Other cams in the area - http://www.raptorresource.org/falcon_cams/index.html
This nest was featured on the Nature show "American Eagle" - and now you can watch it live!

The nest is in Decorah, Iowa; the exact location is not publicized to protect the eagles. Local time is Central time. The pair has been observed since 2002 - you can read the Nest Diaries online at the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation website - but this is its first year online.

Based past experience for this pair, look for eggs in the first half of March, chicks in mid-April, and fledging in early July.

2008-2009 Season:
  • cam on: February 16
  • eggs laid: March 2, 4:58 pm; probably March 5, 5:45 pm (seen morning of March 6); March 9, late afternoon (seen 6:20)
  • hatched: April 9, 7:14 am (38 days); April 10, 1:58 pm (36 days); April 14, 8:36 am (36 days)

Very beautiful pair here, i take it the one towards the front would be the female as she seems bigger then the one towards the back of the nest, she looks to be eating some breakie

Someone on the Maine forum thought they might have had a glimpse of an egg - and she does look as if she's straining a bit in your 9:27 s'cap, Kim. Have you seen anything? :?

Added a few minutes later:
False alarm, I think. Haven't been able to check the whole nest, but have seen more of it. And now they've both left - no egg - yet! :D According to the info in the link in the first post, they have been as early as this, though had their first egg in early March the last couple of years.

Edited again to add:
Interestingly enough, this cam is different in Internet Explorer and Firefox. In IE, it has the camera button Kim mentioned and the "full screen" button they describe, but the image looks a little stretched; in Firefox I just see the cam window and the time at the top, but the proportions look better. I think. I had to download an ActiveX control for IE - so it's possible it uses a plugin Firefox doesn't have yet. :puzzled

It appears to me as if they may not be planning to wait too long - I don't know if they were actually trying to melt the snow out of the nest bowl - but it sort of looked that way! Great pictures, kittenface! :D :D

I haven't heard any sound, Karen, and the cam seems to be more a fast refresh than actual streaming, making me think sound isn't likely here. It would be nice if they could upgrade to add that next year!

I haven't learned who's who here yet, but there's an eagle and a large fish in the nest - and the eagle is just standing there, so I'm guessing it's Dad and he's waiting for Mom to come see what he brought her. He's been there a few minutes - oh I think I see some talons approaching - why yes - here's Mom! :D

I think I just saw an egg. Anyone else watching? I was multitasking and not paying too much attention. Have to do a couple of things first, then I'll post a picture.

Hi - just saw this cam! Woo hoo! I can't seem to connect to it. It mentions a couple of downloads to view the cam, but nothing is happening for me. :ecnono

It sometimes takes a while before anything happens. It also has more controls in IE than in Firefox (full screen, take screenshot). And it has a funny refresh rate - takes some getting used to. :eclol

She's been up and down a lot, and I haven't seen it again - but it really looks to me as if there was an egg in these pictures from 4:58 nest time.

Definitely an egg, JudyB! I agree. I watched for a while and saw the eagle get up but couldn't see the egg. However, it certainly appears some incubation is happening here! :thumbsup

I've seen the egg again, and a couple of people on the Maine forum got pictures after I posted an alert over there. I've had the nest open most of the afternoon, and it was empty until around 3:30 nest time, so we know the egg was laid sometime between 3:30 and 4:58. :D
